HIGHLIGHTS OF 2018

Sian Owen Photography – Highlights of 2018

Well, where do I start! I thought 2016 was an extremely busy year as I worked and welcomed the arrival of our second daughter Penelope, but I was wrong! 2018 sure topped the craziness by 100%

In 2018 I managed to shoot 18 beautiful weddings,20 commercial shoots, 12 portrait shoots, and 6 e-shoots, have a third baby and move house! Not to mention it was the HOTTEST Summer since 1976 – but I did it and I’m so so pleased. I’ve been running my photography business for 6 years now, I can’t believe where the time has gone. I have always worked from a desk in the dining room which has had its challenges as being right in the middle of the house, it’s hard to get quiet time to get on with it all. In our new home I’m so pleased to have my own office space where I can have my work on the wall, files on shelves and albums out to view. It’s amazing how having a creative work space can help with mindset, motivation and personal development.

As I’ve been looking back through last years images, I have been thinking again as to how thankful I am to all of the couples who have booked me to capture their special day. I know I say it each year, on each new highlights post, but I really do mean it. Being able to photograph people going about their lives is a dream come true. Photographs are so important. They are important to us now, but they will be treasured even more in years to come by our children’s children.

I have carefully selected (way to many) images to share with you from 2018. I tried to cut it down, but it was too difficult! So here they are, all 274 of them! I have a couple of weeks off weddings now, it’s a great time to update my website, order new albums and meet up with my photographer friends before we start another crazy season. It’s also wonderful to have free weekends to spend with my family. 2019 is going to be a special year for us too as we are getting married in August. It’s going to be wonderful being the bride and groom for a change! Just to think this time next year as I will be writing my 2019 highlight’s blog as a married woman!

Here’s to what 2019 has in store!

Hazel and Mike Oldwalls Gower Wedding

Hazel and Mike – September 1st 2018

Oldwalls Gower Wedding

I was extremely delighted after meeting with Hazel & Mike that they then chose me to photograph their stunning wedding day at oldwalls . Hazel and mike are such a wonderful couple and their love for each other was clear for all to see. I had the best time capturing and creating gorgeous images on their wedding day and working alongside Simon & Dave of ‘We Create’ videographers.

I have spoken to Hazel and Mike since their wedding to find out how they felt planning their wedding. And how they felt on the day and after. Below are just a few images that tell their story.

What was your inspiration for your wedding?

At first the inspiration was going to be based on Italy as we got engaged in Sorrento. So we were going to have yellow as the main colour to represent the lemons grown there and a possible lemon table arrangement and have a vintage relaxed affair with pizza as the evening food. However, it all changed when I found THE dress… and THE dress is pink. The dress dictated the theme of the wedding from that moment. The colour scheme changed from grey and yellow to grey and pink and as the style of the dress is very fairytale and whimsical this look was carried on through the whole wedding-from the flowers used to the tails on Mikes suit.

How did you find the planning? fun, stressful, or a mixture!?

We went through a mixture of emotions throughout the planning of the wedding. We planned the wedding in 9 months from the moment we got engaged which had its pros and cons. The pros were that we didn’t have time to get too carried away with the little things or spend more than we wanted as once we had sorted the main things we just about had enough time to do a few finer details and not obsess about things we hadn’t got. The cons about planning it in under a year was that we had limited dates to choose from and then found it harder to find the services to fit the date- this was a little stressful. Once we had found the main things which we felt were important (the venue, the photographer, the videographer, the band, the dress and bridesmaid dresses) we could relax and enjoy doing the home made touches and sourcing the rest. Planning a wedding certainly was a mix of highs and lows, busy times and lulls, but we look back at the process and are proud at what we achieved to create the perfect day for us.

On the day how did you feel?

Hazel – Once I walked up the aisle and saw Michael I could not stop smiling! The smile didn’t leave my face all day! I was just full of love for not only Mike but my friends and family around us. It was a truly happy and magical day for us.

Mike – I felt quite calm as we were in good hands with the venue, the photographer and the videographer. We trusted that they would do a great job and they did! This allowed us to relax and just enjoy the day. I was a bit nervous on the morning, but good nerves which then went away as soon as I saw Hazel walking up the aisle. The rest of the day I felt so happy-it was lovely to spend the day with everyone we love.

Best moments?

Best moments were a mix really. The funniest best moments were when I got stuck walking up the aisle because my dress was too big and also me forgetting my vows- it just made me laugh so much at how clumsy I am.The most romantic moment was our first dance, we were dancing on cloud nine to our song (Kiss Me – Sixpence None The Richer) that we heard in Sorrento shortly after getting engaged.

However my absolute favourite and most precious moments was when my nan read a poem at the ceremony and delievered it with such heart that there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. And my grandad delivered an amazing speech which was heartfelt in places and hilarious in others. He even had everyone singing ‘What a wonderful world’. To have both my grandparents play a part in our big day was incrediblely special to us. I am very lucky to share it with them and to have that memory of them is the best moment for me.

How you feel looking back?

I look back on the day with pride in what we achieved- we brought all our family and friends together and that was the most important thing. To share that happy moment in time with everyone was awesome.

Everyone on the lead up was saying that the day will go past in a blink of an eye so I made the concious effort to absorb everything. After the wedding I could remember the day in such detail but as time moves on my memories are fading which is why I am so happy I hired a fantastic photographer and videographer (We Create) to relive the day.

FFION & JACK E-SHOOT CARDIFF BAY

Ffion & Jack

Cardiff Bay e-shoot – June 2018

I met Ffion & Jack at a beautiful wedding I photographed in July 2017. I was extremely excited when they contacted me after the wedding to see I could photograph their forthcoming wedding in 2019! They also booked an engagement shoot with me that we decided to do at Cardiff Bay with their dog Rudy. E-shoots are a great way to experience what its like to be in front of the camera and for me to get to know the couple and for them to get to know how I work, and of course have a gorgeous set of images. Lots of couples like to use the images for save the date cards.  It was a beautiful evening at the Bay. I know FFion & Jack enjoyed their shoot and we’re all looking forward to the big day next year!

Jodie & Hassan - Camden London e-shoot

Jodie & Hassan engagement shoot

Camden Town, London

I first met Jodie in April 2016 ( I was pregnant with Penny) when we worked on a shoot together. Jodie is a very talented make up artist and beautician. During the shoot we got talking about her engagement to Hassan and their wedding plans! I was delighted following the shoot when Jodie got in touch to say she’d like to book me to photograph their wedding at Margam Park Orangery in September 2018. Jodie and Hassan secured their booking with me two and a half years ahead of their wedding which is amazing. They also booked an e-shoot that we decided to do in Camden Town as they live in London. On Easter Sunday (now with a new baby bump in tow) I took the train to London and had a fantastic time photographing the two of them in such an incredible setting. Jodie and Hassan are clearly in love and their passion for each other shone through out the shoot. I love these images. Their emotional connection along with the colours and vibrancy in such a busy city make me very happy! They also enjoyed every moment of the experience. I’m very excited for the wedding, (there will be no baby bump at the wedding!)

Jade & Owain Wedding - The Stonemill Monmouth

Jade & Owain

28th July 2017

The Rolls of Monmouth – The Stonemill Monmouth

I met with Jade and Owain a year before their wedding at the very place that they met each other, Starbucks! They told me the story of how Jade was out shopping with her Mum and needed a break so left her to it and popped for a coffee. After searching for a seat, she asked this lovely man (Owain!) if she could sit opposite him, and so they got talking and the rest is history!  Jade is very creative and had plans to make so many crafts – they looked amazing. They were planning a colourful, fun, relaxed day with a huge guest list. It was clear Jade & Owain’s wedding was going to be a crazy fun day!

We had an e-shoot a couple of months before the wedding that involved their gorgeous dog Charlie. E-shoots are a perfect opportunity to get to know a couple and their relationship. And for them to get to know how I work too.

It’s amazing how quickly a year can pass from their first meet up. We got together again (at Starbucks) to go through the final details of the day. Crafts were well underway! Stag and hen do’s were imminent and the wedding was only weeks away. The wedding day arrived and I made my way to The Stonemill’s beautiful cottages where all of the bridal party were getting ready. It had been raining so it was a bit damp, but the light perfect!

The groom and groomsmen looked wonderful in their navy suits and pink ties. Jade wore a stunning lace dress from Laura May Bridal http://lauramaybridal.co.uk and the bridesmaids were in gorgeous white bead-embellished dresses. Jade and Owain’s day was full of fun, laughter and lots of gin and rum from start to finish. So much to capture! Jade is a very talented cake baker and runs her own cake making business along side her teaching career https://www.theprettycakecorner.com so naturally, she designed and made the wedding cake!

I’ve selected my favourites from Jade and Owain’s wedding to share with you – enjoy!

Venice Wedding Photography

Venice Wedding Photography

Back in 2015, yes 2015! Rachel and I went to Venice to photograph two beautiful couples. It was June, very clammy and warm which brought heavy rain and thunder at times! We spent 3 days walking the streets of Venice capturing gorgeous images of our lovely couples in the most beautiful locations. Venice is so colourful and pretty it offers such amazing back drops for images.

I’m super excited to share with you these images from our adventure. If you’re planing your wedding abroad, I’d love to hear from you. My camera will travel anywhere!

MELISSA & JAMES - HENSOL CASTLE WEDDING

Melissa & James – Hensol Castle

8th July 2017

Cardiff_Wedding_Photographer_Hensol_Castle_Wedding_Sian_Owen_Photography-26

On Saturday I had the absolute pleasure of capturing Mel & Jimmy tie the knot! It was slightly overcast which was perfect (for photography!) and a little cooler than it has been recently which was also ideal! Mel & Jimmy got married in a beautiful church just outside the centre of Cardiff. It’s a church I have never been to before and always driven past and thought about how pretty it is and how I’d like to capture a wedding there one day.  It was a very colourful wedding! There was a mix of colours in the bouquets, the grooms mens ties, the table decorations and a cake to die for!

After the service, a red double decker London bus took the guests to Hensol Castle where they were to celebrate the rest of the day – lots of beer and prosecco for the journey too! At Hensol Castle everyone was welcomed with more drinks, this really helped to get the party started. It was clear that Mel & Jimmy were surrounded by their loved ones as there so was so much warmth and happiness filling the rooms of the castle.

Not long before I left, I took Mel & Jimmy to the jetty on the lake to have some time out together before the evening party started. I must be honest I do love photographing each ‘section’ of a wedding day. But one of my favourite parts of the day is when I whisk the couple away for 20 minutes in the evening to create some beautiful images of them together.  During the Summer months the air is cooler at this time and if we’ve been lucky to have a sunny day, we have a sunset and soft low light to work with. But most of all, it’s important that they get this time together just to have a breather and talk away from the guests, just for a short time. The day goes so quickly, and in such a flash, that they wouldn’t get this precious time If I did’t suggest it.

I have gone through the day’s images and chosen a few to share! Enjoy.

THE LITTLE THEATRE BATH WEDDING - KESHIA AND MATT

Keshia and Matt married in The Little Theatre Bath on Saturday. It was wonderful for me to photograph a wedding over the boarder! In fact I have a lot of non Welsh weddings this year! It’s lovely to work at new venues. This is still a working cinema, it so quaint and pretty! Of course, being a cinema it is very dark, which made lighting a challenge (a good challenge) I had an off camera flash set up to capture Keshia as she walked down the aisle, this light adds a theatrical feel to the mood. The guests were supplied with 3D glasses and were served popcorn doing the ceremony, very untraditional which is fab!

Bath is a beautiful town with such beautiful old stone buildings.  We managed to get outside and take some gorgeous images just before it lashed down with rain! (these shots are some of my favourite from the day) You’ve got to love a bride & groom that will get out in the rain!

There was so much energy at Keshia & Matts wedding, they were a fun couple to photograph. Here are a couple of peeks from the day!
